Morrison LogoWe are currently recruiting for the role of Location Planning Analyst to join our Location Planning Team, as we accelerate our expansion into the convenience market.

Over the past 18 months we have developed the M-Local concept and have now opened 12 convenience stores.

We are now building a team to step change our rate of store openings in 2013 as well as develop the infrastructure and processes suitable for a scaled convenience business.

What will I do?

  • Provide strategic insight to help define the Morrisons network strategy at both a macro and micro level, making recommendations for both new site requirements and existing store developments.
  • Produce detailed analysis in order to formulate sales and impact forecasts and conduct thorough investigation into factors that may affect any recommendations.
  • Work cross functionally to provide key recommendations in the form of Board reports for capital investment decisions.

What skills and qualifications do I need?

The person who gets the job will ideally:

  • be highly analytical and have a good understanding of the key driving factors in location planning and a thorough understanding of the UK retail (preferably food) market, geography and demography
  • have the ability to communicate well, explaining complex issues in a straightforward manner to a variety of audiences
  • be able to cope with a demanding (and often pressured) workload
  • have recent experience of data and spatial analysis in a retail environment and will have a proven track record in sales forecasting
  • have some experience in using spatial tools such as GIS systems and geo-databases such as Alteryx

Role Purpose

Analysis of customer, competitor and geo-demographic data to support Property, Commercial and Retail in particular and more generally the Insight team and wider business with location based decisions

Role Objectives

  • Management and development of the B&Q GIS system and other relevant location based tools and technologies
  • Analyses store catchment data, market value, population and demographics to assess business opportunities and in particular inform Property strategies and local trading activity.
  • Provides the following information to Property to an agreed SLA; basic and detailed customer and competitor data for site analyses for property acquisitions, store closure and lease expiry analysis
  • Develops a data led location development plan to prioritise store investments (e.g. revamp, new, relocation)
  • Applies best in class analytical and statistical methodologies to develop B&Q geodemographic capabilities i.e. gravity modelling, store clustering
  • Works to ensure geo-demographic capabilities are accessible to the wider business, so that local decisions can be made efficiently and effectively (e.g. local ranging, marketing, store operations)
  • Fully utilises and exploits all data sources to create a full understanding of the local market dynamics e.g. B&Q club card, postcode capture, drivetime data
  • Applies an understanding of the business dynamics and drivers to ensure insight is actionable.
  • Manages relationships with key stakeholders (within the Customer Insights team and the wider head-office functions) to prioritise workloads according to customer impact
  • Works with the Market and Competitor analyst to ensure market and competitor information is updated and fully exploited
  • Takes responsibility for specific Insight projects or challenges, where geodemographic data is the most significant dimension, and works with other teams within the Insight team to produce and communicate final results and recommendations.

Knowledge/Skills/Experience Required

Essential skills:

  • Proven ability to investigate, evaluate and analyse information. Thinking through options to arrive at logical and focussed results.
  • Experience of interrogating large databases using specialist tools (e.g. SPSS, SAS)
  • A good working knowledge in Microsoft Excel
  • Knowledge and experience of using GIS systems
  • Analytical; understands and can apply advanced statistical and analytical techniques to answer business questions.
  • IT skills – ability to interrogate large datasets using specialist tools. Knowledge of data manipulation and modelling techniques e.g. regression, k-means.

Knowledge and experience:

  • Curiosity; has an innate passion and curiosity for understanding and investigating customer behaviour and how this can improve business performance.
  • Customer focussed; understands the needs of internal and external customers, responds promptly and ensures the customer is at the forefront of their thinking.
  • Commercial awareness; is able to context insight and recommendations through a good understanding of business drivers and dynamics (including high-level strategy, sales, costs, profits, competitor activity).
  • Communicating; balances talking and listening in meetings, communicates complex issues simply and clearly, shares ideas and knowledge with others. Is able to influence and challenge in a cross-functional environment.
  • Understands the relevant technology applications in their area and environment.
  • Good organisation skills with the ability to manage simultaneous projects across differing stakeholders.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and a passion for excellence.

Minimum level of education or qualifications:
