Speaker Biographies

Our speakers’ biographies are below.

James Debenham, Principal Consultant at GMAP

Following a degree in BA Geography and a PhD in Geodemographics at the University of Leeds, James started his career in an earlier edition of GMAP in 2003. After 7 years in GMAP, he ventured into an in-house customer analytics role with Virgin Media, before returning to his consulting roots in 2013 with the Location Intelligence team at CACI.

In 2024, James rejoined GMAP as a Principal Consultant and continues to provide consultancy support to clients in automotive and retail, as well as helping to find solutions for current and potential new clients.


John Chesworth, Director at GMAP

John first joined GMAP in 1991, to develop and deploy the original Spatial Interaction Models. He has dedicated over 34 years to the delivery of market intelligence and network planning solutions for major blue-chip organisations. He founded and developed analytics teams for R.L. Polk (now S & P) in the UK, US, Europe and Australia. He returned to GMAP in 2004 to further develop the network planning practice, ultimately buying the GMAP business with Matt Cawcutt in May 2019.

John has worked with most global OEMs and a very large number of High Street Retail, Pharmaceutical and Fuel companies with a depth of experience all around the world. He is currently supporting the deployment of a new dealer strategy for a major global OEM across Europe and Asia-Pac.


Andrew Fowler Commercial Director, Edge Analytics

Andrew is the Commercial Director of Edge Analytics and has responsibility for business development and customer support activities.
Andrew has a master’s degree in GIS for Business and Service Planning from the University of Leeds. He has a long history in the data and analytics industry, having worked for EuroDirect, Callcredit and GMAP Ltd in the consumer intelligence business.


Dr Kate Staines Senior Consultant, Edge Analytics

Kate is a Senior Consultant at Edge Analytics, specialising in demographic forecasting, housing needs modelling and product development. Working closely with our partner organisations, she provides evidence to inform Local Plans for local authorities across England and Wales. She also specialises in the development of bespoke demographic evidence and modelling to clients across a range of sectors. Kate studied for her BSc and MSc in Geography at Durham University and joined Edge Analytics following completion of her PhD at the University of Leeds.


Michelle Morris, Professor at University of Leeds

Michelle Morris is Professor of Data Science for Food in the School of Food Science and Nutrition and the Leeds Institute for Data Analytics at the University of Leeds. She leads the interdisciplinary Nutrition and Lifestyle Analytics team which uses novel forms of data, including supermarket transaction records from a number of UK supermarkets, for research into population and planetary health.  She is a formerly a Co-Director at the ESRC funded Consumer Data Research Centre and currently Deputy Director at the SDRUK funded Healthy and Sustainable Places Data Service, leads the evaluation of the IGD funded Healthy and Sustainable diets intervention programme, and an investigator at the UKRI funded UK Transforming Food Systems grants FIO Food and DIO Food.  


Luke Burns, Associate Professor in Quantitative Human Geography at University of Leeds

Luke Burns has taught at Leeds University as a professor in GIS and Human Geography for over 13 years.

He joined the SLA to help promote Location Planning to students and universities and helps to organise, promote and judge the SLA Student Awards.
