The Midcounties Cooperative have an exciting opportunity to join our established Acquisitions team providing an effective and efficient service to our Operational Groups.

As Location Planning Manager you will prioritise and manage location planning requirements for the Society’s expansion plan for all of our operational groups. By setting a targeted expansion plan, you will successfully focus resource on the right sites, forecast accurate sales for new store and extensions, understand current and new store performance including the impact of competitor openings.

• Be an expert on the landscape, population and demographic change across the target trading area, with good general knowledge of the remainder of the UK
• Develop and maintain the expansion plan for the Society’s trading groups in order to identify and prioritise target locations for new site search activity
• Identify drivers of store performance; define model location criteria for existing and proposed trading formats

Reporting into the Acquistions Manager this is a permanent opportunity offering a salary of £40,000 – £45,000 per annum.

The Retail Consultancy team at HDH specialises in providing retailers with bespoke advice on store portfolio management and location strategy. Statistical-rigour is at the heart of what we do: we forecast store performance, allowing retailers to de-risk expansion strategies. Together the team has many years of experience in the field, having advised a number of prestigious retailers in both the UK and global markets, including Marks & Spencer, Nike and Subway.

The team also advises landlords and investors on both existing and new retail developments. For example, assessing the demand for different sectors of retail, and recommending the appropriate size and format of a new shopping centre.

Operating as a distinct arm of the business, the Retail Consultancy team offers independent, market-driven advice.

THE ROLE

Job Title: Retail Consultant

Experience: 1 year or more in a location planning role or similar

Role Purpose

This is an important role, working as a retail consultant to advise both retailers and landlords on profitable strategies. The job will involve a varied mixture of analytical analysis alongside more qualitative work, including writing reports, attending meetings and presenting findings to clients. The applicant will need to enjoy both managing their own projects and working closely with others.
The analytical side of the role will involve frequently working with data in Excel, research and data gathering from internet sources, and mapping of data using Geographical Information Systems (GIS). Training and support will be provided but a years’ prior experience in a location planning or similar role are required.

An interest in retail is essential; the successful applicant will need to keep up-to-date with the latest trends in retail and show an enthusiasm for these developments.

What will I do?

2. The Role:

Reporting to Jonathan De Mello (Head of Retail Consultancy) the role would suit a true strategic/management consultant, as it would involve a combination of sales, project management, project delivery, and client presentations.

Duties:

  • Winning new business from both existing and new clients, with an overall personal sales target of £300k+.
  • Developing and presenting effective project proposals to prospective clients.
  • A solid knowledge of the retail and property sectors, in terms of both retailer and property performance.
  • Contributing significantly to retail consultancy projects – writing reports and delivering the results to the client.
  • Managing a team of analysts on sizeable projects in order to deliver reports on time and to client expectations.
  • Developing new in-house research tools, and identifying new ways to exploit existing data.
  • Working alongside the team to identify, develop and execute a marketing strategy to underpin the continued development of CBRE’s retail advisory services.
  • Attending and eventually presenting at conferences /events to raise awareness and discuss CBRE’s retail offering.
  • Making presentations both internally and to clients to demonstrate report findings and conclusions.

3. Candidate Specification

Qualifications: – 2.1 degree classification in a numerate/analytical course – e.g: Economics, Geography etc. Desirable – Postgraduate qualification.

Experience and Consultancy Skills: – A minimum of 5 years commercial experience and a demonstrable knowledge of current issues facing retailers and property investors, ideally at a consultancy/advisory firm.

Sales skills: – Achievement of a personal sales target of £300k+. Sales acumen and the gravitas to confidently present to clients are key. Ideally you will already have a network of clients that value and trust your work, and have secured sales of considerable value from these clients.

Technical Skills and Computer Literacy: – Retail analysis capabilities with accurate and exceptional attention to detail. Must be able to conduct and manage analysis projects, write reports, and deliver to clients explaining findings. The research should include a combination of results from models (gravity/multiple regression etc..) that have been built by you.
Microsoft software and GIS software.
High level of numeracy.

Team Skills: Team player who deals effectively with colleagues and clients. Is equally happy to work autonomously. Collaborative style needed. Experience of managing a small team would be helpful.

Personal and Communication Skills: Good communication skills, both verbally and in writing. Confident and assertive. Sociable and outgoing. Understands and appreciates the importance of confidentiality and integrity. Robust and resilient to cope with the demands of consultancy.

Planning and Organising: Ability to prioritise and co-ordinate tasks efficiently ensuring all deadlines are met. Problem solving and delivering solutions is a key requisite.

4. Salary and Benefits

Basic Salary: Dependent on experience, set in line with the market and reviewed on a regular basis.
