Make a positive difference to a top FTSE 100 Retailer’s Property Team

Sainsbury’s Property division is responsible for all Sainsbury’s trading and non-trading property assets, including supermarkets, convenience stores, Argos and offices, industrial and retail depots. It all adds up to give us responsibility for the 4th largest retail estate by number of shops (Over 2,100, and still growing) and the 2nd largest by floor area.

As a Senior Location Planner you’ll draw on market intelligence, location planning expertise and commercial understanding to recommend appropriate investment to satisfy customer demand across all channels – Supermarkets, Convenience, Online, Argos and other brands. You’ll have an opportunity to play a key part in setting the strategy for assigned regions in terms of both new space requirements and use of existing space.

To be successful in this role you’ll need to demonstrate excellent analytical skills and expertise in location planning or/and site research techniques combined with understanding of customer needs.

More about the role:

  • Utilise market data and a thorough understanding of performance of Sainsbury’s estate to define and evolve a network strategy across all channels (for assigned regions) that delivers optimum access to the UK market.
  • Proactively identify growth opportunities and priority areas for investment.
  • Be an expert on retail landscape and population and demographic change in relevant regions, with good general working knowledge of remainder of UK. Use this expertise to proactively undertake analysis that provides direction for wider business.
  • Leverage strong engagement skills to achieve buy-in from wider business, presenting recommendations with authority at relevant forums.
  • Challenge proposals that do not meet network strategy requirements or are not in the best strategic interests of the company.
  • Lead improvements in methodology and processes.
  • Stay abreast of output of Post Implementation Review sessions for new stores, identifying any emerging trends in performance for geographies or location types etc. Ensure any learnings related to methodologies/processes used in Location Planning team are embedded and communicated to wider teams as appropriate.
  • Prioritise & manage location planning requirements for assigned regions.
  • Work in partnership with Property Development to drive delivery of the Property Strategy, recommending priority areas for investment.
  • Manage provision of accurate sales forecasts for new stores, extensions and trade transfers to deadlines.
  • Role model best practice in line management of assigned Location Planner.
  • Contribute to development of wider team.

More about you:

  • Experience of location planning / site research techniques, applications and approaches.
  • Excellent analytical skills, combined with a good understanding of customer needs.  Recognition that the customer is at the heart of all capital investment decisions.
  • Ability to integrate quantitative (nectar data, segmentation, etc.) and qualitative information (retail feedback, customer research, etc.) to support investment decisions
  • Ability to communicate complex analysis clearly to colleagues from different disciplines and build long-term, collaborative engagement with stakeholders across the business.
  • Experience communicating analysis and recommendations to senior management.
  • Willing and able to challenge accepted practices and processes
  • Good planning, organisational and prioritisation skills
  • Highly numerate
  • Experience of GIS
  • Valid driving licence
